In spark ignition engine (SI engine), the mixture of air and fuel is usually formed outside the engine. Based on the way of energy-accumulation, the ignition systems on SI engine are divided into two types: capacitor discharge ignition system (CDI) and transistorized ignition system (TI). Although the two types of ignition system are differentiated basing on the way of energy-accumulation, they have given out the same ways of producing high-voltage pulse.
The studies so far have tried to solve the drawbacks of each type of ignition system in different ways, but most of the improvements have only sorted out on a single type of ignition system. This paper will research and design a combined ignition system which consists of two distinct types of ignition system above with an available programmable controller. In what range of engine opperation that the advantage of transistorized ignition system far outweight the advantage of capacitor discharge ignition system, we will trigger it to work and vice versa.
