Employers' Assessment on Training Quality and Work Response Level of Medical Graduates at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine

Abstract

This study is to evaluate the training quality and work response level of medical graduates at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine from the employer's perspective. Subjects of the study are medical graduates who have been working in health facilities. The assessment is done based on a set of criteria, including work response level, attitude towards the medical profession, medical knowledge and skills, foreign language skills, IT skills and employer's satisfaction. The survey results at 18 medical units (160 respondents) showed that: Up to 86.26% of the employer assessed as responding or more (mean=4.01, SD=0.63); Most of the respondents (91.88%) assessed that the level of completion of the assigned work was quite satisfactory or higher (mean=3.89, SD =0.88); and 85.63% of the respondents were satisfied and very satisfied (mean=4.00, SD =0.59). The mean scores are high when assessing attitudes towards the medical profession (mean=3.80-4.18, SD=0.58-0.71), medical knowledge and skills (average=3.68-4.06, SD=0.52-0.70), on foreign language and IT skills (average=4.03-4.10, SD=0.58-0.62). The research results show that the training quality of the University has met the requirements of employers as well as helping the University to have a basis for making plans to improve and enhance the quality further in the future.

Author Biographies

Thi Thuy Linh Dang, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Vietnam

Dang Thi Thuy Linh. She graduated with doctor of Educational Management in 2014. She was sent to many countries for short-term training in many countries in the region on scientific research in education, education quality accreditation, develop training programs and assess learners' capacity. From 2007 to 2021, She is Deputy Head of Education Quality Accreditation and Testing Department at Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and She has managed and implemented school-level education accreditation for more than 1,500 preschools, junior high schools, high schools, continuing education centers, intermediate schools and vocational colleges. Dr. Linh is a key member of the City's programs and projects such as the Program on Improving the Quality of Human Resources for Ho Chi Minh City. She has more than 30 scientific articles in the field of education and training, successfully guided nearly 20 doctoral students, masters of science in education and educational management. Currently, She is a visiting lecturer at many universities, a supervisor (PQM) overseeing the quality of international student quality surveys at the OECD, and is the Deputy Head of the Department of University Training Management from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine.

Thi Khanh Tuong Tran, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Vietnam

Tran Thi Khanh Tuong.  She received the B.S. degree in general medicine  from University of Medicine and Pharmacity at Ho Chi Minh City,  in 1994 and the M.S. degree in general internal medicine from  University of Medicine and Pharmacity at Ho Chi Minh city  in 2000. She received Doctor Specialist level II in general internal medicine in 2014 at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and Doctor Degree in Gastroenterology in 2016 at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. She gained title Associate Professor in 2020.

From 2016 to 2018, she was Head of General Internal Medicine Department. From 2015 to 2021 she was Head of Department of Clinical practice management. From 2018 to 2021, she was Vice Dean of Falculty of Medicine. From 2021 until now, she was Dean of Falculty of Medicine at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine.

Furthermore, She is Member of the Executive Board of Vietnam Association for the Study of Liver Diseases,Member of the Executive Board of Association of Gastroenterolory of HCM city and Deputy Editor-in-Chief  of Vietnam Journal of Hepatology. Her main scientific research areas were: 1.Assessing the value of non-invasive methods in diagnosis of liver fibrosis on patients with chronic liver diseases with liver biopsy considered as gold standard 2. NAFLD: Clinical and Biochemical and Histological Features, degree of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis 3.Assessing and comparing the efficacy of therapies for H. pylori eradication. Her Scientific research projects at university level: 03; 05 published books, 40 published research articles in Viet Nam and 15 on pretigious International Journal.

Cong Hoa Truong, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Vietnam

Truong Cong Hoa. He received the Medical Doctor degree from University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in 1995 and the Master degree in Preventive Medicine from the same university, in 2005. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in Education Management at USSH-VNUHCM, Vietnam.

From 2020 to date, he has been Vice-Chief of Biomedical Research Center of PNTU, Vietnam. His research interest includes biomedical topics, health and education management.

Mr. Hoa’s award includes the 3rd Prize, HCMC Technical Innovation Contest, 2015-2016, Vietnam.

Nguyen Thanh Van Phan, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Vietnam

Phan Nguyen Thanh Van, She graduated with a Master of Medicine in 2005 and a Doctor of Hematology in 2014. Dr. Van has many years of experience in teaching at hospitals, University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City and Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine. Experienced in leadership and management positions at Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital and currently holds the position of Vice Rector of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine. During her work for 24 years (from 1998 to present), She has made many contributions to the cause of people's health care and medical human resource training. Regarding scientific research activities, she has more than 20 years of experience in conducting scientific research projects, especially scientific research projects at city and national level. She is the moderator and directly participates in scientific research projects of practical value, serving and making useful contributions to the development of the industry, serving the community. She has about 40 scientific research works that have been published in prestigious domestic and foreign scientific journals.
