Current Status of Teaching and Learning Fine Arts Subjects in Fashion Design Training at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education

The Fashion Design major at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) is trained according to the viewpoint of harmonious combination of two elements of fine arts and sewing techniques. To determine the current status of teaching the Fine Arts Subjects in the Fashion Design training program at this university, these following methods were applied: Survey with a sample of 323 students and alumni, interviewing 07 lecturers participating in training this major, pedagogical observation and document analysis. The survey results show that: Students highly appreciate the training effectiveness when they suppose that they can apply Fine Arts knowledge to professional activities, teaching methods are applied flexibly, actively and students' learning forms are diverse, the assessment of learning results meets the subject objectives and learning outcomes of the program. In addition, learning objectives need to be improved in the direction of enhancing practicality and applicability; Teaching content of the Fine Arts subjects should be increased in duration and implemented in the direction of specific application to the fashion industry; Regarding teaching methods, it is necessary to strengthen the design of practical learning situations/tasks associated with the reality of the fashion industry.
