Some disadvantages of using seminar at university of social sciences and humanity vietnam national university - ho chi minh city

Abstract

Seminar is a specific form of academic instruction in higher education for forming students’ self-study skills, promoting creativity and critical thinking. It also provides foundation for building the professionalism of the learners to prepare for the workforce. Hence, almost instructors at University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMUSSH), appreciated the necessary of using seminar and they also desired to use it. However, due to many challenges in applying seminars in their teachings, a study of 88 teachers and 527 college students showed that the application rate of seminar was low. The results indicated some disadvantages of using this form of academic instruction. This paper presented the study results and suggested solutions to enhance efficacy of using seminar in HCMUSSH’s training.
