In this paper, we propose a method for optimal design of grounding system based on IEEE.std 80 standard. The current along any one of the conductors is discharged into the earth in a different manner. The urrent is discharged into the soil from the outer grid conductors rather than from the conductors at or near the center of the grid. An effective way of making the current density more uniform between the inside and periphery conductors is to employ a nonuniform conductor spacing, with the conductor spacing larger at the center of the grid and smaller toward the perimeter. This method completely uses all grounding conductors to decrease step voltage and touch voltage of grounding system.
